Portarra is the largest city in the state of Galapetra and considered the oldest city in Torland, founded in 1799. The remains of Fort Tor in near downtown was the original site of European colonization on the island.
Portarra is a city steeped in tradition. As the likely oldest city in Torland, Portarra has a rich history. Its nickname of Fogtown stems from the heavy fog that comes in from Cooley Bay.
The primary institution for higher learning in Portarra is Gavas College (GC) located on the banks of the Gavas River in North Portarra. The Bobcats are a member of UTAC (Universities of Torland Athletics Commission) and compete in the Forest Lakes Conference (FTC). Gavas is a smaller school by Torland standards with subpar athletics programs but several well-known undergraduate programs such as nursing, engineering, and social studies.
The Portarra metro is serviced by the Portarra-Gavas International Airport (PGI) located just outside the southwestern edge of Gauldover in southwest Portarra.
Highway 10 runs along the coast through the entirety of Portarra in a north-south direction. Highway 24 ends at an intersection with Highway 10 in downtown Portarra and heads due west toward Taiver. A bypass highway called 10B circles westward through Portarra, crossing the Gavas River in Gavas Heights and rejoins the main highway in Old Rommer Wall. At the three corners of Fort Tor, Salgo Slope, and Rommer Wall, 10B meets the incoming state road from Neray, which continues to Highway 10 creating an area called The Triangle.
The Gavas River has only five bridge crossings in Portarra proper and a lack of major highways which can make traffic troublesome, especially during high peak periods. For a city of 4 million, Portarra has stubbornly stuck to old road traditions and the city is known for having bad traffic.
Portarra is home to two teams in the Torland Hockey League; the Portarra Whales, who play their games at the Market Marina Center, and the Portarra Pioneers, who play their games at the Fort Tor Heritage Arena.
