Telephone Numbering Plan of Torland

The Torland telephone numbering plan describes the allocation of phone numbers in Torland. It has changed several times, the most recent major reorganization by the Torland Communications Authority taking place in 1992 to better serve the massive population growth.

Overview

Torland uses a 10-digit national telephone number system. Every telephone number has a two-digit area code followed by an 8 digit number, typically shown as xx-xxxx-xxxx. According to the system, each primary city in Torland is assigned an area code. Some cities, such as Alko, have two assigned area codes. Cities and towns without an assigned area code use the nearest available code by distance. For international calls, the +83 country code prefix is used. Federal districts, buildings and entities, including military bases, use area code 01.

999, often pronounced “Triple-Nine,” is the emergency services number in Torland. Other recognized international emergency numbers such as 911, 112, and 000 are typically received and redirected to 999 on Torland telephone networks.

00 is the operator number in Torland, while 1800 and 0100 are typically used for free call services.

History

As part of the Yusey Plan in 1946, Torland officials assigned two-digit area codes for telephone numbers by state numbered 01-12 and 99 for emergency services. Later, due to confusion and rapid expansion in Alko, 09 was removed from Pakola and reassigned to 13.

In 1962 Torland officials decided to revamp the system and use the 93 incorporated cities as a base from which to assign new two-digit area codes, designating Abrieden as the first number in alphabetical order from 06-98, leaving numbers 02, 03, 04, and 05 unassigned for future expansion, along with 99 remaining reserved for emergency services.

Based on the alphabetical and numerical system used to assign area codes, several numbers were reassigned to better serve the coverage. 09 was unassigned from Bancana, which was given 05 instead. Officials didn't want to have confusion with 99, which was reserved for emergency services. The codes for Bancana and Abrieden overlay in certain sectors of their metropolitan area. Vensessor was assigned 92 but federal buildings and officials in the district will utilize a 01 prefix instead according to federal usage rules.

In 1992, Torland officials made some adjustments. 08 was removed from Antedon and assigned as the secondary area code for Alko. Antedon was merged with Belris and code 13. Perimur's 63 was removed and merged with 17 in Caddell. Code 63 was reassigned to Snobon, to cover the Torch River Lakes area. Varele's 91 was reassigned to Hadenfield to better cover the valley area. Varele will utilize Kurohara's code 44 instead. The code 19 assigned to Certonrack was removed and merged into code 67 for Portarra. Code 19 will be assigned to Hyletville and the Tamokeva coast.

Codes 02 and 09 have typically been used in film for fictional numbers, but Torland officials have been recommending against usage of 09 as it has spurred too many prank calls accidentally going to emergency hotlines. 04, though officially unassigned, has seen a recent uptick in usage for 5G wireless and other digital mobile services. It is expected to be fully reserved for this in the future. 03 remains unassigned.
